Our Impact

We’re working toward a greener world, starting with plastic-free coastlines.

For every product sold, Solgaard, in cooperation in with the Solgaard Nyx Foundation and its network of impact partners, cleans up an estimated 6 lbs. of ocean-bound plastic from coastal communities around the world.

Projects & Partnerships

One of the most exciting parts of Solgaard is working with our impact partners. Through collaboration, we’re able to have a greater impact.
Solgaard Nyx Foundation

Rewilding the earth is a core goal of The Solgaard Nyx Foundation. As the foundation works to scale up its efforts on cleanups, it is taking a ‘panini press’ approach – by working with upstream and downstream partners to help improve the health of mangroves in Indonesia. Indonesia has the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem – which is home to incredible biodiversity.

The Solgaard Nyx Foundation works in close collaboration with multiple cleanup partners, including but not limited to, Sungai Watch, CRDC Global, and CLOCC. The Solgaard Nyx Foundation is also funded by other organizations as it works to scale up environmental cleanup efforts.

The Solgaard Nyx Foundation is fiscally sponsored by Far Away Projects, a 501c3 entity. Learn more at www.solgaardnyx.org.

The Solgaard Nyx Foundation is a science backed non-profit which focuses on plastic cleanup and community education efforts.
Sungai Watch

As part of our multi-year plastic collection and mangrove health restoration partnership with Sungai Watch, we’ve hired a team of locals to install and operate a series of river barriers collecting over 1,000 kgs of plastic daily from Indonesia’s most polluted rivers and mangroves. In addition to purchasing equipment to wash and shred the plastic waste collected, we funded the construction and operation of the Sungai Watch x Solgaard Mangrove Facility, a new collection and sorting facility in the mangroves of Denpasar, Bali, open for public visitation as of 2023. These efforts not only intercept ocean-bound plastic before it pollutes the ocean, but also revitalizes the mangrove ecosystems and restores their natural ability to capture carbon.

As part of our flagship impact partnership with Sungai Watch, we’ve funded a new plastic waste facility in the mangroves of Denpasar, Bali, and installed river waste barriers across Indonesia.
Eco-Brick Project

Solgaard provided the funding for the infrastructure and equipment necessary to make eco bricks made from ocean plastic in Banuwangi, Indonesia.

This project is managed by Greeneration and was done in partnership with Coralive and Eco-Ranger ID.

In partnership with Greeneration in Indonesia, we support the infrastructure build out of an eco-brick facility.
NextWave Plastics
NextWave Plastics

The NextWave Plastics is an open-source initiative convened by Lonely Whale, connecting and uniting traditionally competing multinational companies to develop the first global network of ocean-bound plastics supply chains.

Our fellow NextWave Plastics member companies include; Bureo Inc, CPI Card Group, Dell Technologies, Herman Miller, Humanscale, HP, IKEA, Interface, and more.

We are a proud member of the NextWave Plastics consortium of companies.

Recycling & Repurposing

The circularity and durability of our luggage is of the highest concern to our team. In addition to preventing plastic from entering the ocean, our intention is to begin robust carbon capturing initiatives.
3 million pounds of plastic have been diverted from our oceans with our current plastic removal partnerships.
In 2023, we opened our first visitor-friendly plastic sorting site, the Solgaard x Sungai Watch Mangrove Facility, in Denpasar, Bali.
We are officially a B‑Corp Certified Corporation.

Materials

We design and manufacture with intention, aiming for efficiency and circularity. Our materials are mostly ocean-bound plastic or biodegradable.
Shore-Tex®

Solgaard unveiled its award-winning proprietary fabric made from recycled plastic, Shore-Tex® in 2019. Acknowledged by Fast Company as a ‘World Changing Ideas’ 2020 Award Finalist, Shore-Tex® is now used in all Solgaard bags and suitcases, including the Carry-On Closet, named ‘Best Inventions’ Award Winner by TIME Magazine.

Shore-Plast™

In 2019 we started researching ways to replace ABS plastic in our electronics with ocean-bound plastic collected from beaches and riverways.

In 2020 we released the HomeBase, Solar Boombox, and Solar Juicepack all made with Shore-Plast as the primary material. In 2021, we launched the Shoreline watch, also made with Shore-Plast™

Recycled Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a ridiculously strong material. We use up to 60% recycled polycarbonate - the maximum we're able to without compromising the strength and durability of our suitcase shells.

Supply Chain

Our supply chain is paramount at Solgaard. We ensure that our factory and supply chain partners pass the highest standard of audits. As we grow we maintain close attention to the experience of every person who contributes to our success.
100% of our our freight shipments have had their carbon offset achieving neutrality.
100% of our travel gear factories have been audited within the last year.
85% of our partners use reputable third party audits like ICAS and/or WRAP. We're working towards 100%.
